R. David Gustafson is a retired mathematics professor at Rock Valley College in Illinois and has extensive teaching experience at Rockford College and Beloit College. In addition to this highly popular college algebra reference with Jeffrey Hughes, he has co-written Gustafson/Karr/Massey’s BEGINNING ALGEBRA; INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA; BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA; BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA: A COMBINED APPROACH; and the Tussy/Gustafson and Tussy/Gustafson/Koenig Developmental Mathematics series. His numerous accolades include Rock Valley Teacher of the Year and Rockford’s Outstanding Educator of the Year. He has been actively involved in the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) as a Midwest vice president and has served as president of IMACC, AMATYC’s Illinois affiliate. Professor Gustafson holds a Master of Arts from Rockford College in Illinois and a Master of Science from Northern Illinois University.

Jeffrey Hughes is the Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator at Hinds Community College (Hinds CC) and holds degrees from Mississippi University and the University of Mississippi. With more than 30 years of teaching experience at Hinds CC, Professor Hughes excels in teaching college algebra, calculus II, and differential equations. He harbors a deep passion for mathematics and a strong commitment to student instruction, viewing teaching as a privilege. Professor Hughes continuously innovates in presenting topics, engaging students, and enhancing their critical thinking skills. Alongside this edition, Professor Hughes has co-authored PRECALCULUS, published by Cengage. He has been honored with Hinds CC’s Outstanding Academic Instructor of the Year Award and the Phi Theta Kappa Teacher of the Year Award twice. Recognized by the Mississippi Legislature for his dedication to education, he has also received the HEADWAE award. Professor Hughes is actively involved in the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) and has served as president of its Louisiana-Mississippi affiliate, LaMsMATYC. Additionally, he engages with the Mississippi Collegiate Mathematics Association (MCMA) and has twice served as its president. Professor Hughes teaches leadership at the Honors Institute in Hinds CC. He has dedicated over twenty-five years to working part-time as a student minister at his church and has spent seven summers teaching English in China.
