About the Authors
Craig Hemmens holds a professorship in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University. He earned a JD from North Carolina Central University School of Law and a PhD in criminal justice from Sam Houston State University. With a publication portfolio of 20 books and over 200 articles, much of which address legal aspects within the criminal justice sphere, Professor Hemmens currently serves as the editor of the Criminal Law Bulletin. His research interests encompass criminal law and procedure.
David C. Brody is a professor within the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University. He received a JD from the University of Arizona School of Law and a PhD in criminal justice from the State University of New York at Albany. Brody is the author of various casebooks on criminal law and criminal procedure, along with scholarly articles featured in publications such as the American Criminal Law Review, Crime and Delinquency, Justice System Journal, and Judicature. His current research centers on judicial selection and evaluation, jury reform, and the interplay between law, politics, and criminal justice policy.
Cassia Spohn holds the position of Faculty Director and Foundation Professor of Criminal Justice at Arizona State University. Spohn has authored several books, including The Color of Justice: Race, Ethnicity, and Crime in America (with Sam Walker and Miriam DeLone) and How Do Judges Decide? The Search for Equity and Fairness in Sentencing. Her array of articles examines prosecutors’ charging decisions in sexual assault cases, delves into the impact of race/ethnicity on charging and sentencing choices, and explores various aspects of judicial decision-making. Spohn’s research spans topics such as the impact of race and gender on courtroom processing decisions, victim characteristics and case outcomes in sexual assault proceedings, judicial deliberation, sentencing patterns of drug offenders, and the deterrent effects of imprisonment. In recognition of her work, Spohn received the University of Nebraska Outstanding Research and Creative Activity Award in 1999.
