Inspired by connections with her Kazakh daughter-in-law and grandchildren, she applied for a Fulbright scholarship to Kazakhstan in 2011 where she instructed social policy with social work students on the Siberian steppe. Dr. Koenig’s academic work focuses on ethical decision-making and cross-cultural aspects of social work practice. Additionally, she has designed and facilitated an intercultural social work program between the College of Social Welfare and social work faculty at the Universitá del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy.
   Rick Spano, PhD, LSCSW, Professor Emeritus, College of Social Welfare, College of Kansas, has educated social work policy, practice, ethics, and social work history and philosophy for nearly five decades. He established and assisted in bilingual and comparative research social work courses between the College of Social Welfare and Escuela de Trabajo Social, College of Costa Rica. Additionally, Dr. Spano’s professional experience includes extensive involvement in foster care, and he runs a private practice where he employs a family systems approach to address sexual abuse of children and adults. He remains engaged in creating and delivering materials on social work ethics.
   John B. Thompson, PhD, MSW, MA, MATS, is an associate professor at the College of Social Work, St. Ambrose University. Dr. Thompson’s interests, research, and teaching are interdisciplinary, blending insights from Christian theology, philosophy, and the social sciences. His courses cover understanding human behavior and tackling various social challenges such as mental illness, the opioid crisis, environmental degradation, and mass violence. Publications include writings on the convergence of theology and psychiatry, pragmatism and social work, and a forthcoming book on Christian theology and social justice.
