Understanding Psychology for Sustainable Living explores how psychological research can contribute to addressing environmental challenges arising from the disruption and degradation of natural systems by human behaviors. By drawing from environmental psychology, ecopsychology, conservation psychology, and related fields, the authors offer a comprehensive overview of pertinent theories and research in an engaging and accessible manner.

This edition represents a significant update and expansion influenced by a growing body of research and global ecological, political, and social changes. The text specifically emphasizes environmental equity and collaborative efforts for systemic transformation. More than a third of the content is entirely new, with over nine hundred fresh references. Additionally, this edition features a vibrant full-color layout with over 200 colorful illustrations, graphs, and photographs. Current issues covered include climate change, loss of biodiversity, environmental justice, Indigenous perspectives, social media, as well as the impacts of pandemics like COVID-19. Existing content from the previous edition has been meticulously updated throughout.

The book is structured into twelve chapters organized under four sections:

  • Surveying Our Environmental Impact initiates with an introduction to psychology as a science of sustainability, followed by three chapters offering insights into the ecological crisis, its historical context, and a vision for a sustainable future.
  • Promoting Sustainable Behaviors includes five chapters on research methodologies, theories, and findings relevant to understanding and transforming unsustainable practices.
  • The Interconnectedness of Health and the Environment comprises two chapters exploring the interdependent relationship between planetary and human well-being.
  • Leading by Example introduces two new chapters to inspire readers to apply their knowledge as agents of change in the world. The first focuses on collective efforts for structural transformation, while the second offers a positive psychology perspective on addressing the ecological crisis in ways that enhance well-being, resilience, and personal fulfillment.

Tailored to fit within a standard college semester, Understanding Psychology for Sustainable Living is essential reading for sustainability courses across various disciplines. It also offers valuable insights to individuals outside academia, including policymakers, lawmakers, and community leaders working towards sustainable practices. The text is enriched with online resources for educators.
