This manual is an advanced introduction to statistical methods for students in communication and related social science fields that focuses on the rationale and processes of conducting research that contributes to social fairness.
Modern researchers are motivated by the potential for academic work to have an impact on society, to strive towards more fair and just outcomes, and to interact with the public to help them make informed decisions navigating the social, cultural, and political landscape armed with accurate, unbiased, and current data. This book exemplifies the mechanics and significance of statistical research methods by delineating each phase in the research design process with studies addressing concerns of social fairness. It provides practical guidance for scholars aiming to participate in the reform of societal structures, practices, and viewpoints through community and civic involvement and policy development. It includes step-by-step instructions in statistical methods—from conceptualization through all stages of study execution, including a comprehensive manual for statistical analysis—and showcases how researchers can address social equity issues in systematic, rigorous, ethical, and thoughtful ways.
This text acts as a central or supporting textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in research techniques for communication and social sciences and fulfills a need for a methods manual attuned to students’ desire to conduct research with social significance.
