Reestablishing Fairness: An Overview of Restorative Justice, Sixth Edition, offers a clear and compelling explanation of restorative justice, a movement within the legal justice system with ongoing global impact. The book delves into the wide appeal of this vision and gives a brief history of its origins and evolution as an alternative to an impersonal justice system focused narrowly on the conviction and punishment of lawbreakers. Instead, restorative justice emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behavior, utilizing collaborative processes that involve all the parties involved. The book introduces the theory and principles of restorative justice, and examines its four core concepts: Inclusion, Encounter, Repair, and Cohesion. Several approaches for integrating restorative justice into the criminal justice system are explored, and the book puts forth a strategy for evaluating the extent to which programs or systems are genuinely restorative in operation. The authors also propose six strategic objectives to significantly broaden the utilization and scope of restorative justice and recommend tactics to advance towards the acknowledgment and implementation of restorative programs and systems.
