This editionIt is thoroughly revised and expanded from the prior version, A Practical Guide to Database Design, Second version is intended for those involved in the design or development of a database system or application. It starts by demonstrating how to develop a Third Standard Form data model where data is placed “where it belongs”. The reader is guided step-by-step through the Normalization process, initially using a simple then a more complex set of data requirements. Following this, usage analysis for each Logical Data Model is assessed and a Physical Data Model is generated to meet user performance requirements. Finally, each Physical Data Model is utilized as input to construct databases using both Microsoft Access and SQL Server.
The manual then demonstrates how to utilize a leading data modeling tool to define and manage logical and physical data models, as well as how to create Data Definition Language statements to create or update a database operating in SQL Server, Oracle, or other types of DBMS.
One section is dedicated to illustrating how Microsoft Access can be employed to produce user interfaces for reviewing and updating underlying tables in that database as well as tables residing in SQL Server or Oracle.
For users involved in Cyber activity or support, one part illustrates how to extract information of interest from a log file using PERL, and then shows how to load this extracted information into multiple SQL Server “monitoring” tables adding status flags for analysts to use when reviewing activity of interest. These status flags are employed to flag/mark collected information as “Reviewed”, “Pending” (currently being analyzed), and “Resolved”. The final section then demonstrates how to construct an online GUI using PHP to query these monitoring tables and enable an analyst to review new activity, flag items that need to be investigated, and ultimately flag items that have been investigated and resolved. It is important to note that the manual contains complete code/scripts for both PERL and the PHP GUI.
