Research and teaching interests encompass financial and managerial accounting. He and Professor Ross L. Watts were recipients of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Awards in 1979 and 1980 for their collaborative papers. In 2004, he was honored with the American Accounting Association award for a Fundamental Contribution to Accounting Literature. He was the recipient of the Competitive Manuscript Award in 1978, sponsored by the American Accounting Association, for his essay, “Analyzing the Expenses and Gains of Cost Allocation.” His research, known as “positive theories of accounting,” aims to grasp the expenses and gains of various accounting methods. He and Watts co-wrote the book Positive Accounting Theory, which was published by Prentice-Hall in 1986.
