In its second iteration, theJourney into Statistics: The Reality Puzzle written by popular author and acclaimed educator Andy Field introduces a more effective approach to grasp statistical concepts. This book integrates robust statistics discussion with engaging visual narration to confront the theoretical challenges that novice statistics learners often face in initial courses. Learners are steered away from rote memorization towards autonomous, analytical thinking, and problem-solving.

This foundational insight into statistics is intertwined with the thrilling narrative of Zach, who analyzes, processes information, and confronts obstacles to his comprehension in a manner similar to a statistics beginner. Enhanced with striking, comic book-style illustrations and featuring Socratic conversations, the tale captivates readers by acquainting them with concepts, dispelling any potential statistics-related stress.

No prior knowledge of statistics is presumed, and there is no necessity for data analysis software – everything expected in a preliminary course is included but with a contemporary flair, equipping students with a solid base in comprehending traditional and Bayesian methodologies for data analysis.

With its distinct blend of narrative, concepts, and terminology, this comprehensive introduction to statistics by renowned author Andy Field deviates from the norm to offer a statistical narrative like no other.

Writer’s Profile

Andy Field holds the position of Professor of Quantitative Techniques at the University of Sussex. He has extensively published (100+ research articles, 29 book sections, and 17 books in various editions) in the domains of juvenile anxiety and psychological techniques and statistics. His present research interests concentrate on hindrances to acquiring mathematics and statistics.

Internationally recognized as an educator in statistics, he has authored numerous widely-used statistics manuals including Exploring Statistics Using IBM SPSS Statistics (recipient of the 2007 British Psychological Society book award), Exploring Statistics Using R, and An Adventure in Statistics (nominated for the British Psychological Society book award in 2017; British Book Design and Production Awards, primary, secondary, and tertiary education category, 2016; and the Association of Learned & Professional Society Publishers Award for innovation in publishing, 2016), which educates on statistics via a fictitious narrative and incorporates comic book elements. He is also the creator of the adventr and discovr packages for the statistics software R, which teach statistics and R via interactive tutorials.

His boundless enthusiasm for instructing statistics to psychologists has resulted in teaching accolades from the University of Sussex (2001, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019), the British Psychological Society (2006), and a prestigious UK National Teaching fellowship (2010).

He has carried out the customary academic undertakings: secured grants, sat on editorial boards, conducted administrative work, though he finds it tiresome to recollect these details. However, none of these are significant since, in the improbable event that you are familiar with him, it would most likely be as the ‘Statistics book gentleman’. During his free time, he energetically plays the drums in a loud heavy metal band, and strolls with his cocker spaniel, both of which he considers therapeutic.
