Martin S. Silberberg earned his B.S. in chemistry from the City College of New York in 1966 and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Oklahoma in 1971. He then accepted a research position at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, where he researched the chemical aspects of neurotransmission and Parkinson’s disease. In 1977, Dr. Silberberg joined the faculty of Simon’s Rock College of Bard in Massachusetts, a liberal arts institution known for its excellence in teaching small groups of highly motivated students. Serving as Head of the Natural Sciences Major and Director of Premedical Studies, he taught courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and nonmajors chemistry. The close interaction with students provided him with insights into how students grasp chemistry, their areas of struggle, and the strategies that can aid their success. In 1983, Dr. Silberberg decided to apply these insights on a broader scale and established a text composition and editing company. Before writing his own text, he contributed to chemistry, biochemistry, and physics texts for various prominent college publishers. He resides with his partner and offspring in Massachusetts. For leisure, he enjoys culinary pursuits, vocal performance, and nature walks.
