An Earthy Approach

James Henslin conveys the fascination of sociology in Principles of Sociology: An Earthy Approach, 11/e. Illustrating with his renowned “earthy” technique and personal writing style, the author emphasizes the sociology of everyday life and its relevance to students’ lives. Through humor, personal reflection, and enlightening examples, Henslin encourages students to use their sociological imagination to better comprehend how the components of society interconnect. In addition to this characteristic earthy approach, other distinctive elements include: comparative viewpoints, the global expansion of capitalism, and visual demonstrations of sociology.

My Soc Lab is an essential component of the Henslin educational program. Engaging activities and evaluations provide a teaching and learning system that helps students perceive the world through a sociological perspective. With My Soc Lab, students can enhance critical thinking skills through writing, explore real-world data through the new Social Explorer, and watch the latest entries in the Core Concept Video Series.

About the Author

James M. Henslin originated in Minnesota, completed high school and junior college in California and university in Indiana. Securing scholarships, he achieved his Master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Following this, he received a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health and spent a year researching how individuals adapt to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology include the sociology of daily life, deviance, and international affairs. He has extensively published in sociology journals, including Social Issues and American Journal of Sociology. While pursuing his graduate studies, Jim Henslin instructed at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. Upon completing his doctorate, he became a faculty member at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he holds the position of Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He stated, “I have always found teaching the introductory course to be gratifying. I love witnessing students’ expressions light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and commence to perceive how society has become an integral part of how they perceive the world.” Henslin delights in reading and fishing. His two favored pastimes are writing and traveling. He particularly relishes visiting and residing in diverse cultures, as this exposes him to behaviors and thought processes that he cannot take for granted, encounters that “breathe life into sociological concepts.”
