About the Author

Margaret A. Burkhardt serves as Emeritus Associate Professor at West Virginia University School of Nursing. With over three decades of experience in nursing education and holistic patient care, she actively participates in the American Holistic Nurses Association. Dr. Burkhardt, a prolific writer, has penned numerous articles and book chapters, co-authoring two works on spirituality in health and ethics in nursing.

Alvita Nathaniel, an Associate Professor and Family Nurse Practitioner Practice Coordinator at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center at West Virginia University School of Nursing, combines teaching with over 20 years of service as a family nurse practitioner in free clinics and juvenile detention centers. Engaged in policy-making, Dr. Nathaniel’s articles are regularly featured in healthcare journals and related publications.

Dr. Nancy Walton, PhD, chairs Ryerson University’s Research Ethics Board (REB) and holds the position of Associate Professor at the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing. She currently teaches ethics in the Master of Nursing (MN) program and addresses ethics, along with professional matters, in the undergraduate collaborative program at Ryerson. As a REB member at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, Dr. Walton manages a widely-read Canadian research ethics site (www.researchethics.ca) and co-authors popular blogs on research ethics (www.researchethicsblog.com) and nursing ethics (www.nursingethicsblog.com). She serves as a consulting ethicist for the REB at the Ontario College of Art and Design and the Cardiac Care Network of Ontario. Dr. Walton’s research pursuits include priority-setting and decision-making in cardiac care, the provision of services for children with autism spectrum disorder, the role of parent-as-therapist for children with autism spectrum disorder, and the ethical considerations regarding the use of social media in research. A dedicated long-distance runner, she resides in Toronto with her partner and co-blogger, Dr. Chris MacDonald, and their daughter, Georgia.
