Jonathan Morduch holds the position of Professor of Public Policy and Economics at New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Jonathan’s expertise lies in pioneering innovations that advance the boundaries of finance and exploring how financial markets influence economic growth and disparities in society. Having resided and worked in Asia, his recent publication, The Financial Diaries: How American Households Cope in a World of Uncertainty (co-authored with Rachel Schneider and published by Princeton University Press, 2017), delves into the experiences of families in California, Mississippi, Ohio, Kentucky, and New York as they navigate through financial uncertainties over a year. Building on concepts in Portfolios of the Poor: How the World’s Poor Live on $2 a Day (Princeton University Press, 2009), which he co-authored, the book illustrates the strategies adopted by families in Bangladesh, India, and South Africa to survive on $2 a day or less throughout a year. Jonathan’s research on financial markets is compiled in The Economics of Micro-finance and Banking the World, both published by MIT Press. At NYU, Jonathan leads the Financial Access Initiative, a research center dedicated to studying the extension of financial services to underserved communities. His ideas have influenced policy-making through collaborations with the United Nations, World Bank, and other international bodies. In recognition of his contributions to micro-finance, the Free University of Brussels bestowed Jonathan with an honorary doctorate in 2009. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a PhD from Harvard University, both in Economics.
