ISBN 9780367419479

When introducing a brand new engineering product or modifying an existing model, there is a need to develop designs, make monetary decisions, select resources, opt for manufacturing processes, and evaluate environmental impact. These tasks are interconnected and should not be performed independently. This is due to the fact that the resources and processes used in creating a product can significantly influence its design, cost, and performance in operation. This Fourth Edition of the top-selling Substances and Course of Choice for Engineering Design takes all of this into consideration and has been thoroughly revised to reflect the various advancements in the fields of resources and manufacturing, including:

    • Increasing utilization of additive manufacturing technology, particularly in biomedical, aerospace and automotive applications

    • Highlighting the environmental impact of engineering products, recycling, and growing use of biodegradable polymers and composites

    • Delving further into weight reduction of products by design alterations including resources and process selection, particularly in manufacturing products such as electric cars

  • Exploring new approaches for solving multi-criteria decision-making issues, including multi-component resources selection along with concurrent and geometry-dependent selection of resources and joining technology

Writer(s)

Dr. Mahmoud Farag attained a B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering from Cairo University and an M.Met. and Ph.D. from Sheffield University, United Kingdom. He currently holds the position of Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the American University in Cairo (AUC).

Dr. Farag’s academic focus lies in engineering resources and manufacturing and has authored 5 textbooks, edited one publication, and contributed several chapters for engineering books. He has also authored and co-authored over 100 papers in academic journals and conference proceedings on topics related to the influence of microstructure on the behavior of engineering resources and resources from natural sustainable sources. His work involves biodegradable composite resources, resources and processes for contemporary sculpture, and the application of quantitative methods in selecting resources and processes for engineering applications. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Farag has extensive industrial and consulting experience.

Dr. Farag possesses more than 40 years of teaching experience and has conducted various resources courses at different levels ranging from introductory overview to sophomore/junior students to advanced topics for students pursuing their master’s degree. He has also delivered manufacturing courses with a strong emphasis on how processing affects the properties of resources. One of Dr. Farag’s favorite courses, which he developed at AUC and has authored several textbooks for, is resources selection. It serves as a concluding course for mechanical/resources engineering senior students that integrates financial analysis with product design and resources and process selection.

Dr. Farag has been a visiting scientist/scholar at the University of Sheffield (United Kingdom), MIT and University of Kentucky-Lexington (United States), Aachen Technical University (Germany), and Joint Research Center, Commission of the European Communities (Ispra, Italy). He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Resources Information Society, ASM International, United States; the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining, United Kingdom; and the Egyptian Society for Engineers. He is listed in Marquise Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in Finance and Commerce. Dr. Farag is the recipient of the Egyptian State Award for promotion of Science and the First Order of Merit in Arts and Sciences.
