About the Writer
John Anthony Maltese holds the position of Albert B. Saye professor and associate dean at the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs, receiving the title of University professor in 2023 for notable contributions to the university beyond regular academic duties. He earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. Maltese is the writer of The Marketing of Supreme Court Nominees and Spin Control: The White House Office of Communications and the Management of Presidential News, and collaborator with Joseph A. Pika and H. Phillips Shively on Government Matters: American Republic in Situation. He holds the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor title and was recognized as the Georgia Professor of the Year in 2004 by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Professor Maltese also has significant writings on classical music and was honored with a Grammy Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
Joseph A. Pika has been the James R. Soles professor emeritus of political science and international relations at the University of Delaware. With a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, he previously taught at SUNY at Buffalo. Pika is a partner with Jason D. Mycoff on Conflict & Compromise: Presidential and Congressional Leadership, 2001–2006 and with John Anthony Maltese and H. Phillips Shively on Government Matters: American Republic in Situation. He spent seven years working on the Delaware State Board of Education, four of which as president.
W. Phillips Shively has the title of professor emeritus of political science at the University of Minnesota, also having taught at Yale University, the University of Oregon, and Oslo University, Norway. He has had roles as the editor of the American Journal of Political Science, program chair for the national meetings of the American Political Science Association, and as a principal investigator and chair of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems project (CSES). Recognized at the University of Minnesota, he was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers for his student work. His research focuses on the comparative analysis of elections and statistical research methods. In addition to political science, Professor Shively has a deep interest in natural history and classical music.
