About the Author
Laurence D. Hoffmann November 2011 I consider myself to be an author and expositor as well as a mathematician, and these attributes culminated in the distinct style of this material published in 1975. Before assuming my current role as a Senior Investment Management Consultant with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, I served as a tenured mathematics professor at Claremont McKenna College, where, on three instances, I was honored with the Huntoon Award for Teaching Excellence, a “best-educator” accolade determined by student votes. Alongside my present vocation and ongoing association with this material, I partake in the Strategic Planning committee of the Claremont Community Foundation and serve on the Investment Committee of the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens in Claremont. My spouse, Janice, and I enjoy traveling, relish music and the arts, are parents to two adult sons, three grandchildren, and two Maltese dogs. I am a passionate (yet occasional) tennis enthusiast, am addicted to the Sunday Puzzle on NPR, and have been striving for numerous years to become proficient in Italian. Many moons ago, I attained my BA in mathematics from Brown University and my Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin.
Post completing my bachelor’s degree at Harvey Mudd College and acquiring my doctorate from Caltech, I joined the Mathematics Department at Claremont McKenna College, where I have continued to instruct, specializing in calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. I have a penchant for writing and alongside this material, have penned published works on engineering calculus and linear algebra. My partner, Jaqui, and I ardently support recording texts for individuals with visual impairments and dyslexia. We also embark on voyages whenever an opportunity arises and have a particular fondness for cruising. Our preferred destinations have included Crete, Barcelona, and Singapore. I am an eternal Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Lakers, and USC Trojan football enthusiast, and in my leisure, I compose science fiction novels. We have two sons, a recently born grandson, and seven felines, although it remains unclear whether we possess the cats or they possess us. Additionally, we foster kittens for a local shelter until they are ready for adoption, and indeed, three of our cats are fostered ones that we couldn’t resist adopting ourselves.
Hailing from Cleveland and commencing my collegiate journey at Bowling Green State University in 1984 majoring in fiction writing. Eleven years later, I crossed the commencement stage to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics, a peculiar odyssey indeed. After a two-year stint at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, I returned to Ohio, accepting a tenure-track position at the Hamilton campus of Miami University. I have accrued numerous teaching accolades in my profession, and while upholding an active teaching regimen, I now allocate a significant amount of time to producing textbooks and course materials. I have either single-handedly authored seven or co-authored twelve textbooks, depending on the classification method, along with numerous solutions manuals and interactive CD-ROMs. Having served as the developmental math coordinator at Miami Hamilton for several years, I share the frustration that accompanies low pass rates in the developmental math curriculum. Far too many students find themselves on the conventional Jetson’s-style treadmill, with the abstract nature of the standard algebra curriculum impeding their progress toward their aspirations. Similar to many educators nationwide, I opine that the time is ripe to move beyond the one-size-fits-all curriculum that treats all students equally, irrespective of whether they aspire to be an engineer or a pastry chef. “Because we’ve always done it that way” is NOT a valid reason to maintain the status quo in our curriculum. Let’s collaborate to chart alternative pathways that aid students in learning more and learning better while expediting their transition into credit-bearing math programs. Given that my book (Math in Our World) is tailored for the Liberal Arts Math and Quantitative Literacy sector, I believe I am at the vanguard of making a positive impact in the innovative and inspiring pathways course. I am currently in a state of contentment: my passion for teaching seamlessly integrates with my childhood aspiration of writing. (Please don’t inform my publisher of this – they assume I spend 20 hours daily working on textbooks – however, during the scarce spare moments I have, I am crafting my inaugural narrative.) Formerly, I served as the coordinator of Ohio Project NExT, as I strongly advocate assisting young university educators in regarding high-quality teaching as a significant professional objective. I dwell in Fairfield, Ohio with my charming spouse Cat and fluffy canines Macleod and Tessa. When not teaching or writing, my interests comprise Ohio State football, Cleveland Indians baseball, heavy metal music, travel, golf, and home improvement.
Michael Worth is a seasoned lecturer and assistant departmental leader of mathematics at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. He obtained both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Oregon, where he has been working as a graduate assistant and educator for the past nine years. Michael has conducted classes encompassing introductory and intermediate algebra up to precalculus, statistics, and three versions of calculus targeting, respectively, biology/human physiology, business/economics, and mathematics/physical science students. In his capacity as the precalculus sequence coordinator at U of O and intermittently other sequences requisite for non-math majors, Michael dedicates a considerable portion of his time formulating and reinforcing reliable course materials for mathematics service programs. In addition to this textbook, he has contributed to supplementary materials and evaluations of undergraduate mathematical texts.
