ISBN-13978-1498770019Fundamentals and Functions of Fluid Power Circuits and Controls, 2nd Edition, this textbook is tailored for a primary course in hydraulic power for undergraduate engineering students. Upon familiarizing with the design and functionality of components, students are encouraged to apply their knowledge and analyze the interaction of the component’s operational characteristics with the overarching circuit. The second edition incorporates numerous new worked examples, additional exercises, and problem sets in each chapter. Among these additions, half involve the critical evaluation of specific components, while the rest emphasize design principles and the assessment of system performance. This course does not necessitate a preliminary controls course, but it does establish a groundwork for comprehending the exceptional efficiency and precision achievable when control engineers and hydraulic power engineers collaborate on a hydraulic power design challenge. A comprehensive solutions manual is available for authorized adopting instructors. John S. Cundiff earned his Ph.D. in Natural and Agricultural Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1972. His academic career commenced at the University of Georgia where his initial research focused on mechanizing tobacco transplanting, sparking his interest in utilizing hydraulics in mobile machinery. He joined the faculty at Virginia Tech in 1980 and, in 1987, began teaching an undergraduate engineering course, “Hydraulic Power Systems and Circuits”. The first edition of this textbook, published in 2002, stemmed from 15 years of teaching this course.
Dr. Cundiff retired in 2010, marking the conclusion of a 38-year academic career. He spent his early retirement years completing two research projects. In 2016, following an agreement with Dr. Mike Kocher to co-author (thus dividing the workload), he undertook this 2nd edition project.
Dr. Cundiff is married to Karen, and together they have 4 children, two from her previous marriage and two from his. Collectively, they have seven grandchildren.
Michael F. Kocher obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1979 and 1983, respectively. Mike received his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1986. His academic career began at the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department at the University of Arkansas with a research and teaching appointment specializing in power and machinery. In 1990, Mike joined the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a 60% teaching and 40% research appointment. During his first year at UNL, Mike commenced teaching the “Power Systems Design” course, with approximately three-fourths of the course dedicated to hydraulic power. In 2002, Mike was enthusiastic about adopting the first edition of this textbook for the course due to its focus on design, extending beyond the critical evaluation prevalent in many other textbooks.
Dr. Kocher is married to Jodi, and they have 4 wonderful children and a beautiful daughter-in-law. Mike and Jodi are both licensed professional engineers.
