Subsequent to achieving a Bachelor’s degree in biology from St. Mary’s College (Notre Dame, Indiana) and a Master’s degree in physiology from the Ohio State University, Susannah Nelson Longenbaker started her career in education at Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio. She still teaches anatomy and physiology courses there, a responsibility she’s held for almost three decades. During this tenure, she has been honored with the school’s Distinguished Teaching Award and Ohio Magazine’s Excellence in Teaching recognition. She initiated and is one of the coordinators of Columbus State Community College Fantastic Fridays and offers consultations for Fantastic Fridays Thinking Science. These community programs (partly funded by McGraw-Hill Company grants) introduce middle and high school students to the joys and excitement of laboratory science. In 2006, Sue was presented with an exceptional opportunity by Dr. Sylvia Mader: to become the lead author for Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology. Dr. Mader began her extensive career as a university biology professor, later transitioning to become one of the most prolific authors of biology and human biology textbooks in the country. Her works are renowned for their straightforward writing style and meticulously crafted educational tools. Dr. Mader’s numerous titles have been published and cherished by students globally for nearly four decades.
