Principles of Biostatistics targets college students in the natural and health sciences who want to learn modern analysis methods. It is based on a mandatory course available at the Harvard School of Public Health. In addition to these postgraduate students, many health professionals from the Harvard medical field also attend.
The book is divided into three parts. The initial five chapters address groupings of figures and the methodologies for summarizing, discovering, and explaining them. The following two chapters focus on chance and introduce the tools required for the subsequent exploration of uncertainty. It is only in the eighth chapter and beyond that the authors differentiate between populations and samples and embark on studying the inherent variability introduced by sampling, thus advancing to inference. Delaying the marginally more challenging concepts until a firm foundation has been established makes it easier for the reader to grasp them.
