Illustrative of the notion that social equity is a predominant aim of the social work profession, this text provides a comprehensive foundation in policy analysis — with discussion of policy implementation and a distinct focus on the human challenges inherent in the pursuit of social justice. Aligned with contemporary standards and essential competencies, BASICS OF SOCIAL POLICY, 6th Version acquaints you with philosophical viewpoints on what constitutes social equity and pinpoint values and assumptions evident in present policy discourses. Scholars have expressed their preference for how this book enhances their comprehension of current inclinations, covering topics directly drawn from recent events. The book also introduces you to individuals whose lives are impacted by U.S. policies, as well as to those who have influenced the policies.

Author Information

An admitted knowledge enthusiast/policy aficionado, Amanda Barusch is captivated (and occasionally dismayed) by U.S politics and policies. Maintaining this book for two decades has allowed her to witness the intricate transformations and significant upheavals in America’s quest for social justice. A native of California, Dr. Barusch accomplished her B.A. at Reed College, her M.S.W. and Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, and her M.F.A. in creative writing at the University of Utah. Her primary research and teaching interests lie in the domains of social policy and aging. She has delved into subjects ranging from interpersonal connections to international policy juxtapositions. She has published articles in leading North American journals, seven books, and numerous poems and short narratives. Dr. Barusch became part of the faculty at the University of Utah School of Social Work in 1985, where she has served as Associate Dean. She held the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gerontological Social Work for six years and serves on the editorial board of several global periodicals. She is a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America. She also maintains a Professorial role at the University of Otago in New Zealand, where she relocates when winter descends upon the northern hemisphere.
